Openchip and SUBMER join forces to promote European Digital Sovereignty through sustainable and high-performance data centers

Madrid, Spain – 13 February, 2025. Openchip, a pioneering company in the design of high-performance accelerator chips for advanced computing applications (High Performance Computing – HPC), artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL), and SUBMER, experts in immersion cooling solutions for data centers, announce a strategic collaboration to create a comprehensive roadmap for designing sustainable data center reference architectures. This roadmap will guide the development of cutting-edge, energy-efficient data centers characterized by the use of single-phase immersion cooling in order to reduce energy usage compared to traditional methods. These systems will host processors and accelerators that, co-designed with applications, will reduce energy consumption. Thus, the initiative will contribute to Europe’s technological independence and sustainability goals.

With the support of the European Commission within the framework of Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI ME/CT), this initiative integrates Openchip’s RISC-V-based accelerator chips with SUBMER’s state-of-the-art immersion cooling technology. The alliance will strengthen Europe’s digital infrastructure, reduce dependence on external suppliers, and establish new industry standards for sustainable computing.

The main objectives of the collaboration include:

  • Boosting digital sovereignty: Developing European technologies to increase autonomy and reduce reliance on external suppliers.
  • Sustainable data centers: Building immersion-cooled data centers used for demanding workloads, hence reducing energy consumption and environmental impact.
  • Establishing industry standards: Defining global benchmarks for adaptive orchestration in immersion-cooled data centers.
  • Policy impact: Collaborating with European policymakers to promote innovation in chip and data center technologies.
  • Accelerating green innovation: Partnering with the European Open Compute project to drive the adoption of sustainable technologies.

“We are excited to collaborate with SUBMER to contribute to Europe’s digital sovereignty” said Cesc Guim, CEO of Openchip. “By uniting our expertise in high-performance semiconductor design and SUBMER’s groundbreaking cooling solutions, we are shaping a new era of sustainable, high-performance data centers capable of driving Europe’s digital sovereignty.”

“Through our partnership with Openchip, we are driving progress toward a sustainable, resilient, and technologically sovereign data center infrastructure for Europe”, said Daniel Pope, founder and CTO of SUBMER. “Our combined technologies will enable the development of a greener and more sovereign digital ecosystem, perfectly aligned with Europe’s long-term innovation and sustainability goals.”

This alliance represents a crucial step in strengthening Europe’s strategic position in the global digital economy. By promoting local innovation, sustainability, and fostering collaboration with local/regional suppliers, Openchip and SUBMER are committed to ensuring that Europe continues advancing toward the ultimate goal of digital sovereignty to reduce technological dependence through a solid, secure, and sustainable infrastructure capable of supporting the growing demand for high-performance computing resources across the continent.
